Lady Macbeth’s Conscience The events of Shakespeare’s Macbeth are triggered by an innate sense of self-serving ambition, present especially within Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Macbeth himself is a dynamic man whose ambition transformed him into an entity existing without any sense of morality.

Macbeth Conscience Essay A conscience is what the mind tells a person when he or she has a decision or an action to make. The way a person perceives what their conscience is telling them reflects on their own morality. In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, he creates a theme of conscience.

William Shakespeare's Macbeth During Shakespeare's 'Macbeth', Lady Macbeth shows herself to be a controversial figure, battling with her will and conscience. The first we see of Lady Macbeth is in the opening of Act 1, Scene 5, where she is reading a letter from her husband, Macbeth, out loud.

Lady Macbeth’s guilt is what shows that she’s partly responsible for the murder of Duncan. In the beginning Lady Macbeth is a supportive and loving wife, who gets along well with her husband. When Macbeth tells her about the witches’ prophecy of him being king, she is happy for him.

Lady Macbeth seems to go from being someone with no conscience at all to someone who is overwhelmed by feelings of guilt.

But Lady Macbeth is sure that being king is what Macbeth really wants and that this is the best for both of them. So, in response to Macbeth’s uncertainty, Lady Macbeth manipulates him by questioning his manhood and his love for her. She is successful because regardless of his own conscience Macbeth carries out their plan of murder.

Lady Macbeth shows her guilt towards the deaths of Duncan, Banquo, Lady Macduff and her family. Lady Macbeth’s guilty conscience is displayed near the end of the story when she is sleepwalking. She discusses her feelings, but mainly she reiterates her guilt.

Lady Macbeth mimics this language when she directs her husband to look like an “innocent flower” in order to hide the “serpent” that truly lurks in his heart. The Macbeths know how to use imagery and appearance to conceal the truth, and sometimes they even use those skills on themselves.

Macbeth as a man with solid morals and a well-established conscience allows himself to be manipulated by other significant characters of the play such as the witches and Lady Macbeth.

The relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.The relationship changed in the end by an almost complete reversal of role. Originally Lady Macbeth was the one who brushed off murder, decided what they needed to do and supported her husband while he did them and made sure he didn't blow their cover.

Within this soliloquy, Macbeth's conscience overrides Lady Macbeth's power, filling him with remorse. Macbeth is fearing what will happen to him in the life to come, with thoughts of an undetermined destiny which worry him while his evil deeds may come back to him.
